Steve Jobs announced the redesigned iMacs with brush metal and glass. It's only been two days now and the guys at Cnet.com gave these new beauties Editor's Choice Aug. 2007.
The last time this title was given was when the G5 iMac was introduced back in Nov. 2005.
Looks are only skin deep, but there is more then what meets the eye in this update. Inside the iMac has the new Santa Rosa Chipset from Intel scaling from 2.0ghz-2.4ghz core 2 duo processors. For extra cash, exclussive on the 24 inch model, one can upgrade from the 2.4ghz to a 2.8ghz core 2 extreme processor. Despite the core 2 extreme has the same FSB as the 2.0 C2D and 2.4 C2D, more performance is still expected from a higher end processor.
Unlike the previous Intel iMac generation that could only allocate 3gb of ram due to the processor limitation, the new iMac can now support up to 4gb of internal ram memory for enabling dual channel.
Storage on the 24 inch has been increased up to the 1 terabyte option, spinning at a speedy 7200 rpm.
For this generation of iMacs the graphics chipset has been set to ATI. There is no longer a Intel Integrated graphics chip for the entry level iMac. Now resides an, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB (entry 20 inch iMac) or ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB (20 and 24 inch iMac).
Also, on topic of the replacements on the entry level, 8x double-layer SuperDrive is now offered as standard which enables cd and dvd reading and writing. It also gets more monitor room from 17 inch to 20inch.
Overall, the new iMac is looking like a solid computer for people from all walks of life.
